Escaping the city in their rented summer villas, a group of friends bicker and gossip their way through the longest days of the year. Desperate to pass the time, these Summerfolk engage in outdoor pursuits, artistic endeavours and disastrous love affairs, obsessing over their first-world problems while ignoring the poverty and suffering of their fellow countrymen.
Written in 1904, just a year before the First Russian Revolution, Gorki’s comedy of bad manners explores privilege and responsibility in the newly minted middle classes. As their world hesitates on the brink of cataclysmic change, have they the courage and integrity to push it over the edge?
This production will be directed by Kate Wild.
